A brave incident from Australia has touched many hearts. A 13-year-old boy named Austin Appleby saved the lives of his mother and two younger brothers by swimming in the sea for nearly four hours. This incident happened near the Quindalup beach in Western Australia. Austin’s courage and determination helped his family survive a very dangerous situation.
According to reports, Austin’s mother Joan Appleby was on a holiday with her children Austin, Beau, and Grace near Quindalup, which is about 200 kilometers from Perth. On Friday afternoon, the family was enjoying time in the water using paddle boards. At first, everything seemed normal. After some time, strong winds suddenly started blowing, and the children were pushed farther away from the shore.
Because of the strong wind, the paddles broke, and the family slowly began drifting into the open sea. The situation quickly became serious. Realizing that help was needed, Joan decided that one person had to reach the shore. She chose Austin because he was the strongest among them.
Austin jumped into the sea and started swimming towards the shore through high waves. When he felt the life jacket was slowing him down, he removed it and continued swimming. Even though he was scared, he stayed strong by praying, singing songs, and thinking positively. He later said he kept thinking about his mother, siblings, friends, and loved ones to stay motivated.
After a long struggle, Austin finally felt the sand under his feet and reached the shore. He then ran nearly two kilometers to get a phone and called the police and rescue teams around 6 pm. Soon after making the call, he collapsed due to exhaustion and was taken to a hospital. At that time, he did not know whether his family was alive.
Meanwhile, Joan and the two younger children were still in the sea. Wearing life jackets and holding onto the paddle board, they stayed afloat in the dark, cold water with strong waves. For nearly 10 hours, they remained in the sea, unsure if help would arrive. Rescue teams later found them about 14 kilometers from the shore and brought them to safety.
Police praised Austin’s bravery and said the sea conditions can change very quickly. They also mentioned that wearing life jackets helped the family survive. Austin said he does not see himself as a hero and feels he only did what was necessary.
