Polling for the Puducherry Assembly Elections is being conducted smoothly today (April 9) across Puducherry, with a strong response from voters. People started arriving at polling stations a early as 7 AM, forming long queues to cast their votes before the heat increased.

The early morning hours saw a steady flow of voters at various polling centres. Many citizens preferred to vote early in the day, leading to visible crowds and long waiting lines. Election officials made arrangements to manage the queues and ensure a smooth voting process.

As part of the election guidelines, voters entering polling stations were required to deposit their mobile phones outside. The Election Commission of India arranged secure facilities for storing mobile phones and other electronic devices. Voters could collect their devices after casting their votes.

In a unique initiative to improve voter experience and awareness, an AI-powered robot named ‘Neela’ was introduced at a model polling booth set up at the V.O.C Government School on Mission Road in Puducherry. The robot greets voters with a friendly “Hello” and assists them in finding their part number and serial number required for voting.

Neela also shares awareness messages such as “Perform your democratic duty” and “Do not miss voting.” Developed using Artificial Intelligence technology, the robot can respond to basic queries from voters, making the process more interactive and engaging.

The presence of the robot attracted significant attention, especially among first-time voters and youth. Many people were seen taking selfies with Neela and appreciating the innovative step taken by the election authorities. The initiative added a sense of curiosity and excitement at the polling station.

The model polling booth at V.O.C Government School was also designed to be inclusive. Special priority was given to senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Student volunteers were deployed to assist such voters and ensure they could cast their votes without difficulty.

Although electronic devices were not allowed inside the polling station, proper arrangements were made for their safekeeping. This ensured both security and convenience for voters.

Officials stated that such initiatives aim to increase voter turnout and make the election process more simple and accessible. By introducing technology like AI robots, the authorities hope to create more awareness and encourage greater participation in elections.

The introduction of Neela is being seen as a milestone in the electoral history of Puducherry. It reflects how technology can be used to improve public engagement in democratic processes.
